The vineyard

Château Les Cabannes is located 2 miles south the medieval village of St Emilion. The surface of the vineyard is 7 hectares, where three wines are produced: Saint Emilion Grand Cru, Saint-Emilion, and a small production of red Bordeaux.

Peter and Brigitte Kjellberg, who met each other in 1986 during their time studying oenology in Bordeaux, bought the property in 1997. Peter, the first Canadian to graduate in Oenology from the University of Bordeaux, trained at Chateau Haut-Brion in Pessac in 1988. From 1989 to 1996 he worked with Michel Ponty at Chateau Grand Renouil in Canon Fronsac.

In 1997 Chateau Les Cabannes needed a lot of attention: 5 hectares out of the 7 existing today had to be planted, the cellars needed upgrading and renovating. Today the vineyard is mature, the vines planted in 1997 are adult and complement the pre-existing vines which had been planted in 1965.

The vineyard is certified in organic farming (FR-BIO-01).

The vines

Part of the vineyard (4 hectares) is located on the commune of Saint-Emilion where the soil is a sandy clay with iron deposits. The remaining 3 hectares are located on the commune of St Sulpice de Faleyrens on a gravel outcropping close to the Dordogne river. Varietals used in the vineyard are typical of Saint-Emilion: 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc.

Things are done traditionally in the vines: hand-picking, ploughing and so forth.
